What is depression?
Depression (Major Depressive Disorder) is characterized by persistent low mood, diminished interest or pleasure (anhedonia), and changes in cognition and physical functioning. These symptoms must last at least two weeks and significantly interfere with daily life.
Scientific research shows that depression involves changes in brain circuits responsible for mood regulation, including altered activity in the prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and hippocampus, as well as imbalances in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.
